Brenda Marie Osbey is an author of poetry and prose non-fiction in English and French. Her books include All Saints: New and Selected Poems (1997), which received the 1998 American Book Award; Desperate Circumstance, Dangerous Woman (1991); In These Houses (1988); and Ceremony for Minneconjoux (1983; 1985). Her most recent volume of poetry is History & Other Poems (2013). Her poems have appeared in numerous journals, anthologies, and collections including Callaloo, Obsidian, Essence, Renaissance Noire, and Southern Review. A native New Orleanian, Osbey served as the first peer-selected Poet Laureate of the State of Louisiana,2005—2007. During her tenure as laureate, she toured the United States presenting readings, lectures and open discussions advocating the rebuilding of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region of the United States in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She is currently Distinguished Visiting Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University.
