Modern Landscapes: How the State and Corporations Redefine Land Ownership and Borders

On October 24, 2016 at 6PM, in partnership with the South Asia Center, Center for Africana Studies and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Penn’s Middle East Center will host a panel of distinguished journalists. 

Tom Burgis (The Financial Times) who will focus on Saudi Star Agricultural Development’s investment in farmland in Ethiopia.

Claire Provost (Guardian contributor) who will discuss privatized and ceded land/property as a global phenomenon (with a focus on India.)

Steve Sapienza (Pulitzer Center documentary producer) who will question the impact of Indian and Chinese investment in Myanmar’s natural resources.

And Chris Arsenault (Thomson Reuters Foundation) who will explore the current status and impact of Muammar Gaddafi's deal in 2008 to lease 100,000 hectares of Mali’s best farmland. 

Moderating the panel is Nick Ashburn, director for Emerging Market Strategies at the Wharton Social Impact Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania, and co-host of “Dollars and Change” on SiriusXM.

 

The panel is organized as part of the Campus Consortium partnership between the Pulitzer Center and the University of Pennsylvania, where the event co-sponors are the South Asia Center, Middle East Center and Center for Africana Studies.
