Penn holds “Race and Sports” Conversation as NFL Draft, Penn Relays commence

April 28, 2017

Leading up to the NFL Draft Experience and 123rd edition of the historic Penn Relay Carnival, the world’s first and most recognized annual track meet, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Sports Business Initiative, WSBI, and Center for Africans Studies held a public conversation, Race and Sports: A Lecture on Race, Sports and Activism.

Featuring a world-class panel of heralded Olympians and iconic, pop culture sports figures — Anita DeFrantz, John Carlos, Preston Brown and Sonny Vacarro — the audience was treated to tales of sport at the service of humanity.

“We really want to think about how we got to where we are today,” said Kenneth Shropshire, David W. Hauck professor and faculty director of WSBI. Moderating his last Race and Sports lecture, the newly appointed Adidas Distinguished Professor of Global Sport at Arizona State University hoped those in attendance would leave the event with “some thoughts on how to continue to be more impactful.”
