In this course we will rely on a range of sources to see into the past, and think about forced labor, violence, resistance, family, literacy, and religion among enslaved Africans.
We will examine individual lives to learn about the broad spectrum of what it meant to be enslaved in America and think about how slavery is remembered in contemporary American society.
