Traveling Black: Race on the Road During the Segregation Era

This course will look at the experiences of black travelers from the advent of the first Jim Crow cars to the Freedom Rides of the 1960s.  Questions we will consider include: When did segregation begin--and why was it called Jim Crow?  How did cars change the lives of African Americans?  Were airplanes ever segregated?  What role did buses play in the civil rights movement?  And to what extent does travel segregation persist today?
