On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court announced its decision in Studies for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College. Prior to the oral arguments, Black Women Legal Scholars submitted an amicus brief defending the affirmative action policies of Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. In their brief, they cited two influential works by Africana scholars at UPenn: Heather Williams' Self-Taught: African American Education in Slavery and Freedom (2005) and Dorothy Roberts's Abolition Constitutionalism (133 Harvard Law Review 1, 2019).
