The City is Beyond Human:In Search of Animals inAfrican Urban Studies

This lecture renders some theoretical and empirical overview of the place of animals in African urban studies. It argues that animals have escaped the purview of African urban studies because of the human-centered conception of history and of agency. To correct this deficiency, Aderinto recommends that new scholarship on African urban spaces should consider nonhuman creatures as important elements in the making of cities."Saheed Aderinto is an Associate Professor of History at Western Carolina University

Saheed Aderinto recently completed a book-length manuscript, Animality and Colonial Subjecthood in Africa: The Human and Nonhuman Creatures of Nigeria. He has published seven books, including Guns and Society in Colonial Nigeria: Firearms, Culture, and Public Order (Indiana University Press, 2018) and When Sex Threatened the State: Illicit Sexuality, Nationalism, and Politics in Colonial Nigeria, 1900-1958 (University of Illinois Press, 2015).
