Jacqueline Akins received her BA from Bryn Mawr College and the Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania where she was a William Fontaine fellow. She chaired the Department of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies at the Community College of Philadelphia where she assisted in developing an African and African American Studies concentration. Her interests include freedom discourse among African Americans during the American Revolution, discipline and community in the 19th century A.M.E. Church and slavery in the northern United States.
