Husnaa Hashim
Join us for a celebration of poetry of Africa and the African diaspora featuring Husnaa Hashim, with readings from Eva Maria Lewis, Ndeen Al-Barqaw and Veronica Nocella.
"Honey Sequence", Husnaa Hashim's chapbook, will be available for sale and Husnaa will be signing copies at the event.
Doors open at 5:30 pm. The program starts at 6:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served.
There will be photographs and video taken at this event.

Husnaa Hashim is the 2017-2018 Youth Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, and author of the poetry collection Honey Sequence. She is a first year student at the University of Pennsylvania. Husnaa has competed with the Philly Youth Poetry Movement, performed at various conferences and festivals, and received numerous Scholastic Art and Writing Awards including a National American Voices Medal awarded at Carnegie Hall. Husnaa’s work can be found in RookieMag, KidSpirit Online, the Kenyon Young Writers Anthology, the Voices of the East Coast Anthology, and APIARY 9, among others.
Eva Maria Lewis is a queer Black girl superhero, aspiring academic, activist, and artist from the south side of Chicago. She is the CEO of The I Project, a non-profit organization rooted in intersectionality theory, striving to cultivate equitable communities. All of Eva Maria’s work contributes toward her fight to free Black folk in “hoods worldwide”.
Ndeen Al-Barqawi is an international and city wide spoken word champion. Her work is centered around her queerness, intersectional feminism, Islam and her homeland of Palestine, is which gained recognition from the U.S. Ambassador of Palestine. She currently attends Community College of Philadelphia with a prospective in attending Drexel or Arcadia, where she hopes to become a teacher in Early Childhood Education.
Veronica Nocella is a Philly-based poet and 2015 international slam champion. A member of Philly’s 2015 & 2016 Brave New Voices team and Temple University’s 2018 CUPSI team, they have a rich background in slam and performance poetry. Currently, they are the youth editor and ambassador for Apiary Magazine and an events coordinator for Temple’s only spoken word collective, BABEL. Their first chapbook is to be released in spring of 2020.
