"Toward Home", named in honor of Toni Morrison's 10th novel, will bring together West Philadelphia community members, students, and Penn's Africana studies department to discuss themes from Morrison's writing in relation to Black Philadelphia life. We will read excerpts from Song of Solomon and Beloved with a special focus on Home, which will celebrate its 13-year anniversary a few weeks following our event. Through our discussion, we will connect Morrison's messages about Black identity to the experiences of Black communities in Philadelphia, specifically their moving struggle toward "home' in all of its fullness.
