The Penn Museum, in collaboration with the Center for Africana Studies, is excited to present "Designing Blackness in Brazil," an interdisciplinary and international workshop dedicated to reimagining museums as inclusive, dynamic spaces that authentically represent African and African Diasporic identities. Scheduled for Thursday, March 6, 2025, this day-long event will highlight Brazil’s pivotal role in curatorial innovation, showcasing how Brazilian institutions and professionals are crafting exhibitions that challenge Eurocentric narratives and emphasize the complexities of Black identities.

By featuring practices rooted in decolonial and collaborative frameworks, the workshop aims to foster meaningful interdisciplinary conversations about achievements, research, and future aspirations. Participants will be inspired to develop new paradigms for exhibition-making that honor the histories, cultures, and lived experiences of Black communities.

The workshop is organized by Tukufu Zuberi (Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies, University of Pennsylvania) and Vanicleia Silva-Santos (Curator of the African Collection, Penn Museum), in collaboration with Fernando Lara (Professor, Department of Architecture, University of Pennsylvania).

This event is co-hosted by the Penn Museum, Department of Africana Studies, and the Center for Africana Studies. It is generously supported by the School of Arts and Sciences, the Center for Latin American and Latinx Studies, and the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania.
